Preparing academic learners of English for Zoom close-up presentation

Speaking in front of peers is often an activity that can bring students anxiety. Research shows that drama-based activities can reduce anxiety and increase learners comfort levels when speaking (Galante, 2018). A confident voice imparts confidence, and engaging body language can create a great impression, especially in video conference meetings. In this practical presentation, the participants are introduced to a kinaesthetic drama-based program of learning of learner-centred, multisensory techniques (Carey, Sweeting & Mannell, 2015) that helps academic learners of English to overcome camera anxiety for oral presentations. After introducing the rationale behind the program, the participants will have the chance to briefly experiment with physical techniques for pronunciation practice of suprasegmental features (stress and intonation) suitable for an online environment. This presentation welcomes all practitioners with an interest in the teaching of oral English skills. Presenter: Arizio Sweeting Arizio Sweeting is a published author, academic and teacher educator with nearly 30 years of experience in TESOL. He is a pronunciation specialist in the articulatory approach to pronunciation teaching and a regular presenter at academic and professional conferences nationally and internationally.
