Magellan–Elcano circumnavigation - The first voyage around the WORLD

Magellan-Elcano circumnavigation was the first voyage around the world by boat that started in my city, Seville in Spain. It was the greatest maritime adventure of all time, a voyage that discovered that the earth was much larger than previously thought and that the world is round. The voyage took 3 years to complete which was started in the year 1519. It was managed by the Portuguese Fernando de Magallanes or Ferdinand Magellan in english and completed the journey in 1522 by the Spaniard Juan Sebastián Elcano. Five boats (Trinidad, Santiago, Victoria, Concepcion and San Antonio) departed from Seville with around 250 men. The goal for this trip was to reach the Spice Islands of Moluccas and and open a new trading route for Spain. They went west to respect the Treaty of Tordesillas, an agreement that prohibited ships from sailing to the Spice Islands via the east and around Africa which was under Portuguese control. They sailed across the Atlantic and discovered a strait which is now called Magellan's strait that allowed them to pass through up to the Pacific ocean, named by Magellan expedition. It was the first ever crossing from Atlantic to Pacific and had a stop over which is now called the Philippines which was considered the first arrival of the European to Philippines archipelago. Magellan in Philippines established a good relationship with the locals but unfortunately Magellan was killed in the battle of Mactan led by Lapu-lapu, the chief of Mactan. After then, Juan Sebastián Elcano took command of the expedition and finally reached the Spice Islands. They returned to Seville, Spain in the year 1522 with only one boat left called the Nao Victoria carrying 18 men which resulting in the first circumnavigation of the world and provided evidence that the earth was round. #naovictoria #circumnavigation #magellan Link to buy your tickets: https://tickets.espacioprimeravueltaa...
