FM Synthesis - Practical Guide 3 - How operator stacks work, the truth about modulation

FM Synthesis - A Practical Guide - Part 3 Level: Intermediate The truth about modulation How stacked operators work Disgusting bass example If you'd like to support the channel you can grab a 'Pay What You Want' album from my Bandcamp. https://chrislody.bandcamp.com Chat to me on: @chrislodymusic.bsky.social Listen on:   / chrislody   Here's something I've been meaning to get round to starting for ages, a practical guide to FM synthesis. In my experience FM tutorials usually over explain all the wrong things and rarely get as far as the important things like which setting will make usable sounds. This episode covers how modulation actually creates harmonics and waveforms, then goes on to explain how this affects the way the operator stacks work. I also show a disgusting bass example! (I have a horrible cold at the moment so apologies for my voice!) Just for those people who actually read all this stuff, I bought a Yamaha FB01 FM sound module recently so that will probably be added to the series in time, it will be great for that classic dirty old school Yamaha FM sound. It can't be edited from the front panel though, only from an external midi sysex editor. The one I'm using looks like Windows 95 so that will be interesting 😄 It has some quirks of it's own so I'll cover it once we've got through most if not all of the common features of FM synths. Also the Liven MEGA has been left out a bit so far so that will make more appearances as we explore more things. 0:00 Coming Up 0:14 Intro 0:30 Additive synthesis vs FM 1:32 "Modulation creates sidebands" 1:54 Calculating 1-10 sidebands example 4:15 Calculating 1-1 sidebands example 5:40 Calculating 1-2 sidebands example 6:33 Calculating 1-5 sidebands example 7:29 Summarise 2 OP sidebands 7:48 1-1-10 sideband example 8:58 5-5-1 sideband example 9:24 2-1 with feedback example 10:20 Stacked modulator summary 11:00 "Disgusting Bass" example It's work checking out the whole of the Synth Secrets series, there is a couple specifically about FM: (ADVANCED) https://www.soundonsound.com/series/s... https://www.soundonsound.com/techniqu... https://www.soundonsound.com/techniqu...
