Outside the capital of Nicaragua, Managua, is one of the biggest land-fill sites in the Americas, generated by the one million residents, about a quarter of the entire population of the country. La Chewrayka lies to the north of Managua, on the south shore of Lake Managua. More than 40 years old, the dump grew rapidly after Nicaragua's devastating earthquake. It now covers a massive 42 hectares, making it one of the largest dumps in central America. It is thought that around 1,700 people live on the dump, with thousands more coming to the site to work. And that work brings terrible health hazards, with hygiene the main concern, as Ricardo Castillo reports.
