Build Better Relationships: "Being Right Is Insufficient for Being Effective"

[00:00] Hi, this is Steve Lishansky and I want to share with you one of the key axioms for how you can build better relationships. This is axiom number one from our ‘Becoming Indispensable Partner’ [00:10] program and it goes like this: in a high value relationship, being right is insufficient for being effective. That’s right. Being right [00:20] is insufficient for being effective. Anybody who’s married knows what I’m talking about. Anybody who’s got family or friends knows what I’m talking about. Just because you’re right, you don’t get [00:30] any credit nor any respect for the value of your answer, until the other person appreciates the importance and the value [00:40] of the issue you’re dealing with. Only when you’ve helped that other person or they come to see the value of what it is that you can address with them, do they [00:50] appreciate your answer. To give somebody an answer—even if you’re a hundred percent right, even if you’re giving them gold—you don’t get any credit for it [01:00] until they understand the value of the issue you’re helping them solve. You want to be a high value, high impact partner to anybody you deal with, don’t go in to be right, [01:10] go in to help them get clear about what’s really important about the value of the issue that you’re dealing with, and then you got immense, and immense impact, [01:20] and huge value for the quality of your answer. Make sure they appreciate the issue before you give them your answer.
