Buddhism in Sri Lanka has a long history stretching back to the period of the Buddha. According to the Great Chronicle Mahavamsa, Gautama Buddha had visited Sri Lanka three times. Subsequently, the King Dharmashoka sent forth the great teachings of the Buddha as a royal gift through the mission of his son, the venerable Mahinda Thero. Over millennia, Buddhism had a significant influence on the development of Sri Lankan society, its culture, arts and crafts, architecture. In her Talk, "Buddhist Art and Architecture of Sri Lanka", Dr Prashanthi Narangoda, a Professor at the Kelaniya University in Sri Lanka, traces the evolution and describes the significant characteristics of Buddhist Art and Architecture in Sri Lanka. About The Speaker: Dr. Prashanthi Narangoda, is a Professor in Fine Arts in the Department of Fine Arts of the University of Kelaniya. She is a pioneering research scholar in the field of Fine Arts seeking the interconnectedness of the art, society and culture, with a focus on Sri Lanka and Asia. She teaches Art & Architecture of Sri Lanka, Folk and Urban Theatre of Sri Lanka Folk and Classical dance Traditions of Sri Lanka and India, Buddhist Art and Architecture: India and Sri Lanka and Non-Buddhist Art Traditions of India and South Asia Prof Narangoda graduated from the University of Kelaniya and obtained her Master of Science Degree from the Post Graduate Institute of Archaeology, of the same University. She earned her PhD from the University of the West, California, USA. She has published two books including The Buddha Image in Sri Lanka: An Independent Evolution and has authored several papers and articles for reputed journals. She is a member of several renowned organizations including the American Association for Religious Studies (AAR), The Royal Asiatic Society, Sri Lanka and the National Trust Fund, Sri Lanka. She was Director, SAARC Cultural Centre from 2020-2023. She continues to contribute actively to the development of academic programs and research at the University.
