It will be the third United States Navy ship named for the state of Minnesota. Minnesota was laid down on 20 May 2011. The Minnesota was christened on 27 October 2012 in a ceremony attended by many top ranking officials in the U.S. Navy and Congress. After its official commissioning scheduled for 7 September 2013, the Minnesota will be the first ship named after the 32nd state since 1921. As with other Virginia-class submarines, the Minnesota will operate with a crew of 134 officers and enlisted personnel. Cmdr. John Fancher, is the commanding officer of the Pre-Commissioning Unit. On 6 June 2013, Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that the USS Minnesota had been delivered to the Navy. The ship was delivered nearly 11 months ahead of schedule.
