Amen. + + + + + + + + + + + Readings for the first Sunday of Toba Psalm Psalm 98:2-3 The LORD has made known His salvation; His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations. He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Gospel Matthew 2:13-23 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him." When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more." Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child's life are dead." Then he arose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by God in a dream, he turned aside into the region of Galilee. And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, "He shall be called a Nazarene." + + + + + + + + + + + Why is the Coptic Orthodox Church special not only to the Egyptians but for all in the world? What gifts and blessings has God worked through the Church for all the world? Who are we as a community? Today's Gospel comes after the Birth of Christ. The Holy Family leaves and goes to Egypt, which fulfills a prophecy where God mentions "Out of Egypt I called My Son." There is a Divine Plan, we see God has revealed that the Coptic Orthodox Church is a: 1. Spiritual Church 2. Biblical Church 3. Theological Church 4. Missionary Church 5. The Church of the Martyrs 6. A Church with a Future + + + + + + + + + + + 1. Spiritual Church A Church of Repentance, of a nation returned to God. Symbolically, like the Prodigal Son Return to God Egypt is mentioned 595 times in the Bible, there is no word written haphazardly We are ALL the spiritual 'Egypt' called back to God 2. Biblical Church Honored the Word of God as Orthodox Christians we constantly meditate and eat from the Word of God All services are founded on Scripture, everything in the Church has a Biblical basis 3. Theological Church 1st Theological College was in Alexandria, founded by St. Mark the Evangelist. The School helped defend against the many heresies that arose in the first few centuries of the Church All Seminaries from all Christian Traditions study the History of the Church and the Early Church Fathers, many who were from the School of Alexandria 4. Missionary Church Monasticism Many missionaries brought Orthodoxy to Europe Our Patron Saints, Saint Maurice and St Verena were witnesses in Europe God has called each person to His heart through His Church We are all called to share the Faith, the Love of Christ 5. The Church of the Martyrs The willingness of the Martyrs throughout persecution, truly Love in Action How amazing would it be if we are Martyred as peaceful witnesses of Christ The Martyrs endured Egypt was always occupied, from the first century the Coptic Orthodox Church has been persecuted 6. A Church with a Future Experience a Faith founded on consistency and the teachings of Christ We pray for all adults, children, youth, catechumens and new believers to Trust God's work in His Holy Church.
