Double Duty Portrait Gear | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Getting creative is all part of the photography experience. Usually, the creative process centers around the styling and mood of a portrait but why stop there? Getting creative with your kit can help you solve problems and create new photo opportunities. In this video photographer Gavin Hoey squeezes the maximum use out of everyday studio lighting gear. He calls it his double-duty gear as it’s a kit that is designed to do one job but can be repurposed to do something very different. Starting with the protective covers for studio flashes, Gavin uses them as a cookie to create unexpected lighting results. He looks at several different designs which give a range of outcomes from disappointing to amazing. Next up is the classic 5 in 1 reflector which as Gavin demonstrates is a studio essential for beauty lighting. But give the reflector to an assistant and it becomes a fantastic impromptu wind machine. Finally, Gavin uses a large silver umbrella to create portraits with a timeless soft light look. But it can also serve double duty as a giant shiny background. Add a couple of gels into the mix and the results are colorful and eye-catching portraits. Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, content creator, OM SYSTEM ambassador, and trainer who specializes in all things photography.
