(17 Jan 2022) LEAD IN: Founded in the third millennium BCE, the remains of an ancient city in present-day Iraq have survived important moments of history, including the presence of the IS group. Ashur was the first capital of the Assyrian empire, and was once the location of the coronation and burial of Assyrian kings. STORY-LINE: The ancient site of Ashur (also Assur) city was added to the UNESCO List of World Heritage in 2003. The city was built by Assyrians who were nomads who seceded from the Babylonian empire and settled in northern Mesopotamia -- what is now modern Iraq. The ancient site is composed of three main gates, a square town, a ziggurat, and a Royal cemetery. "Tabira gate is special for the transit of expensive and valuable goods. Tabira is derived from tabir, which means gold, and there was a path that was called 'the royal path' that not everyone was allowed to go on, apart from nobles, kings, and stakeholders in the Assyrian state at that time," says Dr. Musa al Huri, an expert in heritage from Shirqat. Assyria was the major power in the ancient Near East from about 900 to about 600 B-C Ashur was a city-state, the first capital of the Assyrian Empire, which later became its religious capital once Nimrud was chosen as the political capital of the Assyrians. Located on the river Tigris River, the city dates to the third millennium BC. In the city, one of biggest buildings still standing today is called the Ziggurat, but its function remains debated. "The Ziggurat, some say it was a temple, while other say it was an observation area, where they used to observe routes of vessels coming from the political capital to the religious capital," says Dr. al Huri. The city-state also features a big cemetery, where three of the most famous Assyrian kings were buried. "The Royal Cemetery was excavated, and five Assyrian kings' (graves) were discovered there, and they were Shalmaneser, Nasir Pal, and Ashur, along with two other (kings) whose names weren't identified," says Dr. al Huri. The Islamic State group took control of the city of Shirqat and the ancient site in June 2014, and destroyed some sites in the area, before the Iraqi forces managed to fully take back control of the area in September 2016. The nearby town of Al-Shirqat is a district in Salahaddin governorate west of the Tigris River, and is located 294 kilometres (183 miles) northwest of Baghdad.
