SUGGESTED VOICE-OVER: When the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention launched "Your Cancer Risk" in 2000 it received over one million hits on its first day online. Now it has expanded the site to assess the risk of four other major diseases. It's not designed to replace the doctor. Users select an illness, fill in a questionnaire and then a bar graph illustrates their level of risk in comparison to typical men or women of the same age. The assessments are based on the centre's own research into the causes of cancer and its findings on cancer prevention strategies. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well the site was put together and launched to help us bring to the public the prevention messages that we have developed over the last four years, emphasising that changing lifestyle can not only reduce the risk of cancer but also substantially reduce risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and osteoporosis." SUPERCAPTION: Dr. Graham Colditz, Director of the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention By clicking on a suggested lifestyle change the bar graph will shrink the risk accordingly. SOUNDBITE: (English) "As they interact with the website they can actually watch their risk drop if they stop smoking or increase their activity. It's a way to really encourage them to take seriously the potential to change their lifestyle." SUPERCAPTION: Dr. Graham Colditz, Director of the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention The designers say this interactive tool is a unique aspect of the site. SOUNDBITE (English) "When you're presented with the graphical representation of what your risk is you can manipulate that a little bit. You can go in and change some behaviours and say 'oh, that makes a significant change, a significant impact on my risk' and maybe it's not that difficult a thing to do and I can compare that to another change I might make that might be much more difficult to do and, in the extreme, have much less of an impact. And in that way I think it makes it easier to decide, oh this is something I could tackle. And I think that's a unique aspect of this site." SUPERCAPTION: Mike Atkinson, Senior Software Developer The site has been designed to be as user friendly as possible. SOUNDBITE (English) "Yeah, it was very straight forward and simple to use." SUPERCAPTION: Rachael Meyer, Web user The diseases featured are all serious... but they are also highly preventable. Harvard is using the internet to show people what they can do to lower the risks.
