How to Build a Play that Goes Wrong

Tips and tricks to help you you build the set for A Play That Goes Wrong. Provides suggestions for the walls, curtain, shield, bookshelf, coat hook, barometer, portrait, fireplace mantel, swords, and chandelier. Additional tips that I forgot to mention in the video... WALLS: The framed portion of the wall will sway back and forth if you only have vertical studs. Normally they luan/plywood would stiffen it, but that is not being attached directly to the frame. You will need to add some diagonal members to add rigidity. For the portion of the walls that fall, I used ¼" Sandeply Plywood (5.2mm) because they are lightweight and stiff, but they must still be supported by trim attached on the front, or lightweight railing on the back. Gorilla glue helpful for attaching it, but it won’t be enough. Glue will only adhere to the thin outer layer of the plywood, and that can be peeled off. You will also want to use small screws that go through the thin plywood and into the trim. When attaching multiple ply sheets together, gorilla glue is fine because you have a lot more surface area to adhere to, but keep in mind that the glue will expand into the seams. You will want to place something down to protect your floor, and use heavy weights to press the ply sheets together as it dries. CURTAIN: When you attach to hinged block to the frame, you will want to offset the hinge from the frame with a thin piece of plywood (as the video shows). Otherwise there will be pressure against the hinge pin that will keep it from opening freely. If the hooks themselves do don’t fall off on their own, you may want to have the crew members remove them when they take away the fallen curtain. If fixtures remain on the walls when they fall, it can cause damage. COAT HANGER: A strong fishing magnet will be sufficient as long as there is friction between the metal plate and the wall to keep it from simply sliding down the wall. I bent the four corners of the metal plate a bit so they would dig into the wall. It ended up scratching the paint a bit, but not bad enough to be seen by the audience. BOOKSHELF When placing items on the bookshelf, be aware to how centrifugal force could cause things to slide when it is spinning quickly. Heavy objects can be positioned on the outsides, up against the walls, or centered on the axis of rotation. Light weight items should be secured with strong tape. PORTRAIT Metal plates can be used to reinforce the corners of the picture frame, but the ones on the bottom corners should be covered with felt so they don’t scratch up the fireplace whenever they fall. It may aso be helpful to bend the corners/edges of the metal plate inward slightly, so they are less likely to catch on things. DOORS For the door that camps on, make sure that the bottom clamp is always unclamped first. If you are removing the other door by popping out the hinge pins, keep in mind that some of the newer hinges have pins that are not removable. You may need to look for older door hinges. SWORDS: If your sword comes apart with a bolt the way I showed, you will need to take that off in advance. If you slide the handle back, you can press your finger on the shaft to keep it from sliding out of the handle till you are ready. FISHING MAGNETS: Fishing magnets are helpful for many fixtures. I use a 200 lbs magnet to hold the barometer, and a 330 lbs magnet for the coat hook (at least that is the pulling force advertised on Amazon… I have my doubts). Just make sure that you do not put these magnets together!! (I made that mistake, assuming they would repel… they didn’t).
