Putin ‘grateful’ for China’s help to end Ukraine war

Vladimir Putin said Russia is “grateful” for China’s help in trying to find a solution to the war in Ukraine as he began a two-day state visit in Beijing. Speaking at a press conference alongside his counterpart Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Putin said: “We are grateful to our Chinese friends and colleagues for the initiatives they are putting forward to resolve this problem.” On Thursday, Putin was greeted by Xi with full military honours at the Great Hall of the People in the heart of the capital. The two leaders have grown close in recent years despite Western concerns that China is propping up Russia’s economy and providing weapons components for the war in Ukraine. Putin told an audience that the relationship between China and Russia is “stabilising” for the world. “Together, we uphold the principles of justice and a democratic world order that reflects multipolar realities and is based on international law,” he said.
