Founded in 1993, the European Union has since brought together 27 member states and has opened its doors to more prospective members. Its founders, however, had diverse visions for the future of Europe. On one hand, the Christian Democrats, or the EPP Group, envisioned a Europe of Homelands, where the post-war order would be built upon the principles of an economic community, preserving the sovereignty and unique identities of each nation. On the other hand, federalists aspired to a more integrated Europe, akin to the United States, with stronger central institutions and a more unified political structure. How diverse is the European Union today? How will differences within the EU be resolved? Is the future of the EU a kind of federalisation?
