France and United Kingdom were at war, and after a failed attempt to attack Great Britain, Napoleon changes its focus to the East, against Russia and Austria, which were now United Kingdom’s allies. In one of his most brilliant strategic moves, Napoleon marched his army quickly into Germany where he surrounded an entire Austrian army at the city of Ulm, and advanced to Vienna itself, which he took in November 1805. He then moved northeast, into Moravia, where he met a remnant of the Austrian army and the oncoming Russians. He defeated both at the famous Battle of Austerlitz on December 2, 1805. The holly roman empire fell apart, being replaced by the Confederation of the Rhine. Prussia decided to ally with the other powers and attacked the French army, but Napoleon decisively defeated the Prussians in an expeditious campaign that culminated at the Battle of Jena–Auerstedt on 14 October 1806. French forces under Napoleon occupied Prussia, pursued the remnants of the shattered Prussian Army, and captured Berlin.
