An honest look at the Rabbit r1 (gifted post Ai Pin shut down) - March 2025

I was lucky to receive a free Rabbit r1 from the Rabbit team last Wednesday as a consolation for the formal death of Ai Pin. My device came with a defective camera rotation mechanism, which was a real bummer. Because photos were my favorite part of the Ai Pin, AND the R1’s magic camera feature is pure JOY to use. I’ve messaged the support team and they’re doing their part, which I really appreciate. It’s a lovely gizmo with a few rough edges but a fun, magical little core. These are some thoughts after interacting with my niece and son on a Friday night. Dancing to music, chatting with it in Terminal mode. Taking magic camera pictures. Doing Spanish to English translation… it was a good time. Really thankful for this gift from the Rabbit team. Experiencing it first hand has allowed me to feel once more a non-phone mediated yet still high tech social reality. I look forward to seeing how the device and the ecosystem evolve and what memorable moments this device helps create in my life.
