Webinar Expert: Programme Managers - Mahreen Matto, Bhitush Luthra and Shivali Jainer from the Water Programme of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) Mahreen leads the wastewater unit by providing handholding support and technical assistance to drive the agenda of onsite sanitation management. Shivali Jainer heads the Capacity Building Programme in South Asia and Africa. Bhitush Luthra has been involved in research and capacity building on subjects related to citywide sanitation planning, shit flow diagrams, and decentralized wastewater treatment, faecal sludge management. The fifth webinar focussed on four decades of experience and journey of CSE in the environment sector with core focus area on sustainability especially in the water and waste water sector. CSE supports the water sensitive approach and working continuously to improve water literacy and a water prudent society. The session focused on explaining various water initiative of CSE on urban rainwater harvesting, conservation/protection/restoration of water bodies, developing water sensitive design and planning, river conservation and pollution abatement, septage management with decentralised wastewater treatment in local reuse/recycle among many others. Shivali shared the main framework and case studies on Sensitive Urban Design and Planning for Smart and Sustainable Cities (WSUD&P). Bhitush explained the process and mechanism for assessment of excreta management through Shit Flow Diagram (SFD), a tool for engineers, planners and decision-makers to inform urban sanitation programming. With examples, he stressed upon the use of SFD for mapping the intervention areas, effective planning and monitoring. Decentralized Wastewater Treatment (DWWT) as a water smart solution is advocated by CSE for collection, treatment and disposal/ reuse of wastewater at or near the point of waste generation.
