Recreational fires, while typically small, can still be a significant hazard if they are not handled appropriately; and an illegal fire could cost you a $500 fine. Recreational fires should have a fuel area of no more than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height; and be located at least 15 feet from decks, porches, buildings, and other combustibles if in an approved fire pit or ring, or 25 feet from these items if not in an approved container. Fuel should consist of only dry wood, sticks, and small logs. No garbage, yard waste, flammable liquids, or furniture. The fire should always be attended by an adult and who has an appropriate method of extinguishment immediately available and the fire should be fully extinguished when you are done.
