প্রাচীন দক্ষিণ মেসপটেমিয়া অঞ্চল। ইউফ্রেতিস ও তাইগ্রিস নদী দুটির মধ্যবর্তী দোআব অঞ্চলের গড়ে উঠেছে উরুক রাজ্য। এই রাজ্যের রাজা গিলগামেশ। প্রচণ্ড সাহসী, সুপুরুষ এবং বীরযোদ্ধা। দুই-তৃতীয়াংশ দেবতা, এক-তৃতীয়াংশ মানুষ। তার বাবা উরুকের ধর্মযাজক লুগালাবান্দা, মা দেবী নিনসাল। দেবীর দিক থেকেই তার দেহে দেবত্বের ধারাটি এসেছে। গিলগামেশ তাই মানুষ হয়েও অমর, অপ্রতিরোধ্য। সব হাতের মুঠোয় পেলে যা হয়, গিলগামেশেরও তাই হলো। তিনি খেয়ালি ও অত্যাচারী হয়ে উঠলেন। প্রজারা তাকে রাজ্য রক্ষা ও সুনাম ধরে রাখার জন্য রাজা হিসেবে পছন্দ করতেন। কিন্তু তার খামখেয়ালি ও অত্যাচারে তাদের জীবন বিষিয়ে উঠেছিল। এমনকি, কেউ বিয়ে করতে চাইলে নববধূকে আগে রাজার সঙ্গে কিছুদিন কাটাতে হতো, তার সেবা করতে হতো। রাজা সন্তুষ্ট হলেই কেবল বধূ ফিরে যেতে পারত নিজের নতুন সংসারে। Resources: Roar Bangla 1.
