Webinar on CityofWork: Planning for Sustainable Livelihoods | EP 01

The Centre for Sustainable Urban Livelihoods (CSUL) at NIUA held the inaugural webinar of a new series #CityofWork on 6th May 2025. It centered around the needs, vulnerabilities and aspirations of informal urban workers’ like domestic workers, gig workers, care workers, transport workers, waste workers, and construction workers and how urban planning frameworks can create enabling conditions for them to thrive. During the session, Dr. Debolina Kundu (Director, NIUA) offered welcoming remarks followed by a keynote address by Ms. Isha Kalia (IAS), Joint Secy., MoHUA, who stressed the need for unique, out-of-box and customised solutions for mitigating the challenges being faced by these informal workers in the city. Esteemed panellists - Ms. Aishwarya Raman, (Director, OMI Foundation), Dr. Harshil Sharma, (Director of Government Relations, Indus Action), Ms. Geetha Nambisan, Acting Director, Jagori, Dr. Janhavi Andharia, (Director, Institute of Social Studies Trust) and Mr. Rituraj Pegu (Coordinator, Delhi Round Table on Solid Waste Management) - spoke on behalf of specific vulnerable occupational groups, offering unique perspectives on how urban planning frameworks can be rethought and utilized to help ease their struggles.
