Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. Sometimes referred to as the capital of Africa, is a buzzing hub of economic, social and political activity and home to such notables offices as the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. It is where the African Union is headquartered and where its predecessor, the Organisation of African Unity was based. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, as well as various other continental and international organizations. This has given the city political and diplomatic significance in the continent. The city currently has a population of 4.8 million people in the urban area and 2.7 million people in its city area, populated by people from different regions of Ethiopia. Addis Ababa The city lies a few miles west of the East African Rift which splits Ethiopia into two, through the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate. Only since the late 19th century has Addis Ababa been the capital of the Ethiopian state. In its first years the city was more like a military encampment than a town. The central focus was the emperor’s palace, which was surrounded by the dwellings of his troops and of his innumerable retainers. The country, Ethiopia has often been called the original home of mankind because of various humanoid fossil discoveries like the Australopithecine Lucy.Northeastern Africa, and the Afar region in particular, was the central focus of these claims until recent DNA evidence suggested origins in south central Ethiopian regions like present-day Addis Ababa. After analysing the DNA of almost 1,000 people around the world, geneticists and other scientists claimed people spread from what is now Addis Ababa 100,000 years ago.
