The UN General Assembly adopts a draft resolution calling for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The resolution passed with 93 votes in favor, 18 against and 65 abstentions. ------------- The General Assembly adopted today (24 Jan) two distinct resolutions, one introduced by Ukraine and another by the United States, aimed to end the war. The latter was adopted as amended to include European Union proposals, which the Assembly also agreed to. During the same morning session, the General Assembly failed to adopt a Russian proposal to the US-drafted resolution. Addressing the General Assembly before the vote, Deputy Foreign Minister Betsa Mariana presented the Ukrainian draft resolution and urged delegates to remain faithful to the UN Charter. She said, “We need to reconfirm that the aggression should be condemned and discredited, not rewarded. Our position must include substantive elements and ensure that any future peace initiative aligns with the principles of the UN Charter. This is the rationale behind the draft resolution that I have the honor to introduce today on behalf of the broad group of co-sponsors.” She added, “To ensure comprehensive, just and lasting peace is to reaffirm our commitment to the UN Charter and to agree that the principle of sovereignty and the principle of territorial integrity of state within its international recognized borders may serve as the foundation.” US Ambassador Dorothy Shea presented the US draft resolution and said, “It is time for Members States to return to the purposes and principles of the Charter – mainly, to maintain international peace and security, including through the peaceful settlement of disputes. Mr. President, as we gather today on this third anniversary, what we need is a resolution marking the commitment from all UN Member States to bring a durable end to the war. The draft resolution submitted by the United States makes this very point.” After the vote, Russian Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia said, “The only explanation I am doing here is the reason we voted against the American draft. Unfortunately, the absence of our amendment stating that we need to eradicate the root causes of the conflict and also after the European amendments were taking in, the essence of it has become completely distorted. As a result instead of an appeal for peace which originally was put there by the American colleagues, we ended up with yet another anti-Russian piece of paper that is distorting the truth.”
