From the Philippines to Sunnybrook: An internationally educated nurse shares his story

Mel Zacal is an internationally educated nurse at Sunnybrook. He came to Canada from the Philippines in 2016, after working as a nurse for five years in the emergency department at Zamboanga del Sur Medical Center in Pagadian City, Philippines. In this video, he shares about his journey to becoming a registered nurse at Sunnybrook, and how grateful he is for the mentorship and support he received from Sunnybrook. Internationally educated nurses (IENs) are nurses who have immigrated to Canada, bringing with them a variety of skills and expertise. In order to work in Canada, IENs have to successfully meet the requirements set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). To support IENs in meeting CNO requirements, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has launched a new IEN Career Pathway that will help IENs like Mel start their careers in health care and transition into registered nursing positions, both RN and RPN positions.
