Linguists and experts on writing systems generally agree with Herodotus's thesis that the alphabet was introduced to the Greeks by the Phoenicians. But who were those Phoenicians? Herodotus intertwines history with myth. A new theory, based on morphological and semantic analyses of the names of the eponymous and related heroes Cadmus, Phoenix, Agenor, Telephaassa, Cilix, Europa, and others involved in the myth, suggests that the Phoenicians were not a nation but rather a social class. This presentation runs at two levels of difficulty. The narration is for the general public, while the visual material is for a knowledgeable audience and requires frequent pausing to read the supporting evidence.
