(2 Sep 1978) President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel will meet with united States President Jimmy Carter at the American presidential retreat of Camp David, Maryland. The meeting will come as the climax of an uncertain and often frustrating ten months of negotiating between Egypt and Israel, and is seen in many circles as the last chance for any realistic peace settlement in the Middle East. Carter is reported to be coming to Camp David with a series of proposals that include establishing a US air base in the Sinai Peninsula, and posting US soldiers on the West Bank, if such steps are needed to break a negotiating deadlock. Preparations for the summit are being carried out under tight security in the US, and both the Israeli and Egyptian governments have been engaged in extensive planning sessions to determine their strategy for the negotiations.
