Nothing I've read so far has touched me as much as Jacob Petry's book, "Power & Manipulation". In this book, the author dissects Machiavelli's work "The Prince" and gives us an overview of how and where we can apply his teachings, with a lot of didactics and sharp language, but everything is very current and adapted to our historical moment. You can use what you learned in the book to control your desires in front of other people, or use it to defend yourself from manipulators and have concrete tools to act with more security, boldness and cunning in life. Check out some reasons why I believe this reading is worth it: 1 – How to deal with adversaries – Adversaries are not just the people who play on the other side of the team, they are people who are on your side ready to pull the rug out from under you and are closer than you can imagine. In the book, the author comments on how we can distance ourselves from these people, and mainly, occupy spaces to grow even more. 2 – What to do to gain prestige – Forget about stage entrepreneurship, prestige is something that doesn’t come overnight, it’s something you cultivate, but above all, actions need to be planned with a lot of planning and dedication. 3 – The art of constantly reinventing yourself – Necessity moves the world. If you don’t have anything that makes you extremely necessary to someone else, they will leave you aside at the first obstacle that comes between you two. 4 – There is no merit in betraying your friends – Many use the expression “Machiavellian” to designate less than honorable attitudes, but what the Prince tells us is the opposite: honor is what most dignifies a man. 5 – Abandon dogmas and doctrines – Convictions, doctrines and dogmas are always the result of what we carry in our memory. Memory is always fixed, it responds to patterns. Therefore, someone who is attached to their memory, who is oppressed by their beliefs, will never be free.
