Costume Design Is The Hidden Magic In Movies. The Clothes Make The Character! Subscribe: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-Things Actors, writers, directors, set designers-- they’re all important, but without accurate costumes that shine on screen, none of our favorite films would be believable. From Elle Woods to Willy Wonka and Marie Antoinette, the way a character dresses sets them apart, lets us get to know their personality, and develops as the character changes. Fashion designers spend a lot of time putting small details into characters’ clothing to reflect who they are or where the story will go next. In Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” they added black beads to Alice’s dress to highlight that she’s not as childish as she seems. In “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, fairytale colors are chosen to set the world apart from our own. In “Little Women”, “Titanic” and “Memoirs of a Geisha”, modern elements are paired with historical fashion, creating looks that are both relatable and represent a different time period. Fantasy, superhero and sci-fi films use these techniques too to create entirely new worlds, from “Star Wars” to “Harry Potter.” Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman and the Avengers even use CGI to create dynamic costumes that can really get in on the action. From the award winning wardrobe of “Gone with the Wind” to how designers remake the clothing of real people in films like “Frida” and “Jackie”, costume design will always be important when it comes to movie making. Here’s how some of our favorite films use costume design to tell a story, from creating a character’s personality to building entirely new worlds.
