Dinosaur tracks found right here at the Springs Preserve!

Springs Preserve archaeologist Nathan Harper shows off dinosaur tracks found in a landscaping rock right here at the Springs Preserve! Come see them on display within the Dino Summer exhibit: http://bit.ly/1HqSvav The rock was quarried in Southern Nevada and brought to the Springs Preserve as a landscaping boulder. Similar tracks have recently been found in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and Valley of Fire State Park. Here we have at least four complete or partial casts of tracks showing theropod dinosaur footprints. The tracks are of the ichnogenus Grallator. An ichnogenus is a category of animal that is only identified by trace fossils, such as tracks or coprolites (fossilized feces), meaning there are no complete fossil skeletons associated with the tracks. While we don't know the exact species that made these footprints, Grallator tracks are often considered to be from genus Coelophysis. Coelophysis were small, slender, ground-dwelling, bipedal carnivores, which could grow up to 10 feet long. While not as large as later theropod carnivores, Ceolophysis may have hunted in packs.
