Heavy rainfall triggers landslides in North Sikkim, over 1,000 tourists stranded

Over 1,000 tourists are stranded in North Sikkim after a major landslide hit the Munshithang area along the Lachen-Chungthang route. The incident followed continuous heavy rainfall, which has disrupted traffic on key stretches of the highway. As per police sources around 200 tourist vehicles are currently stuck at Chungthang Gurudwara and the ITBP camp, while approximately 1,000 tourists remain stranded in Lachung. Visuals from the site show roads covered with debris and water, with several vehicles trapped on flooded stretches, making movement nearly impossible. The district administration is currently assessing the damage and working to restore connectivity as soon as possible. Landslides occurred at Munshithang on Lachen Chungthang road, previously affected by Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, as well as in Lema and Bob on Lachung Chungthang road, on the other side of Chungthang. Due to road damage and poor weather, authorities have cancelled all travel permits to North Sikkim for April 25. All permits issued in advance have also been cancelled. Tour operators have been told not to send tourists to North Sikkim today. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Sikkim, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two days.
