Billed as “Fighting Mad”, Michael “Dynamite” Dokes and Donovan “Razor” Ruddock fought on this day with Dokes’ WBA Inter-Continental Heavyweight Title on the line. At this time, Ruddock and Dokes were ranked as their No. 2 and No. 3 contenders respectively. Prefight records; Ruddock 22(15)-1-1, Dokes 41(27)-2-2. Dokes was a former WBA World Heavyweight Champion; winning the title against Mike Weaver back in December 1982 via a controversial first round stoppage. Dokes would lose his WBA title a year later to South African Gerrie Coetzee in bizarre fashion, where Coetzee knocked Dokes out at 3.08 of the 10th round as the timekeeper failed to ring the bell in time. Dokes would later revealed in Sports Illustrated that he trained for the fight “on Jack Daniel's and cocaine”. Going into the fight, both fighters were at the opposite end of their careers; Dokes was past his best at 31 years old due to battles with drugs and alcohol as well as having fought a number of tough fights while 27 year old Ruddock was considered to be one of the bests young heavyweight prospects. Despite being past his prime, Dokes still had punching power in both hands as well as a solid chin and just one year ago, he gave the legendary Evander Holyfield a grueling fight before being stopped in the 10th round. A fight named by The Ring as the “Best Heavyweight Fight of the 1980s”. Similarly, the younger Ruddock was also known for his punching power and a strong chin and in his previous fight he came back from a hard knockdown to score a devastating knockout over former WBA Titleholder James Smith. While this fight is mostly remembered for it’s brutal finish, the fight was fairly competitive for the first 3 rounds and Dokes had arguably won 2 of those rounds, even wobbled Ruddock at one point. However, the ending of the fight was the most memorable as it widely considered to be one of the most brutal knockouts in the history of the sport. This is one of Ruddock’s best display of his patented “The Smash”; his left hook / uppercut hybrid. Enjoy this simple highlight I made while I work on some other videos.
