It’s a mystery asking to be solved. But why do we use “x” instead of a question mark or something like that? Why does algebra use letters? In this video, we talk about why letters are used to stand for numbers. Sometimes it’s an unknown number. We call that a variable, and that’s what we’re solving for when we answer a question in algebra. Other times, we know what the number is, but we don’t want to write it out. One example is c, the speed of light, which is a constant (299,792,458 meters/second). c is used in physics and astronomy. Another example is pi (the Greek letter), which stands for 3.14159…(it goes on forever). Pi is used when you do calculations involving the circumference, diameter, radius, and area of a circle. These numbers come up a lot in math and science, so we all agree to use the same letter to stand for them. When you use letters in place of variables and constants, it makes equations much faster and easier to read. Using letters in math saves a LOT of time and paper when you're writing, too. ⏩ 𝙅𝙪𝙢𝙥 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙤: 0:00 Introduction 0:48 Why do we use letters in equations? 1:20 Why use a dot for multiplication? 1:40 What’s a variable? 2:25 The speed of light, c, is an example of a constant 3:45 pi (the Greek letter) is another example of a constant 5:00 Demonstration of using letters in math 📖 𝙑𝙊𝘾𝘼𝘽𝙐𝙇𝘼𝙍𝙔 𝙏𝙀𝙍𝙈𝙎 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙤: variable constant pi (Greek letter) diameter circumference c (speed of light) equation 📚 𝙒𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙨: 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙏𝙤 𝘽𝙚 𝙖 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 ebook: https://amzn.to/2Lh3XSP Paperback: https://amzn.to/3t5jeH3 Kindle Unlimited: https://amzn.to/3atr8TJ 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙏𝙤 𝙎𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙨 Paperback: https://amzn.to/46ev44W 𝙒𝘼𝙏𝘾𝙃 𝙉𝙀𝙓𝙏: Algebraic Expressions ▶️    • What are Algebraic Expressions? ALGEBRA   How Long is that Cat?
