USA: LITTLETON/WASHINGTON: REACTIONS TO SCHOOL SHOOTING

(21 Apr 1999) English/Nat Officials now say 15 people were killed in Tuesday's shootings at Columbine High in suburban Denver, making it the deadliest school rampage ever in the United States. Four females and 11 males were shot dead, including the two suspected student gunmen. Police say one teacher may be among the 15 dead. Investigators, meanwhile, have conducted an initial sweep of the school. Some 30 different bomb devices were found - many were at the school, others were found at the home of the suspects. Some of the devices were pipe bombs, others may have been on timers. Because investigators are still checking abandoned lockers and backpacks at Columbine High School, it may still be hours before the bodies are removed from the school. As the Columbine High community gathered at a Catholic church, the issue of the easy availability of guns came to the fore. Doctors treating the victims complained of the extensive damage caused by automatic weapons. SOUNDBITE: (English) "What used to be low calibre and 22 calibre weapons out there are being replaced with 9 mm semi-automatic, some of them automatic weapons. There are automatic weapons out there in the civilian populous. So we're seeing a different kind of wound, we're seeing more high powered injuries, vastly more significant damaging wounds." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. William Pfeifer Survivors, officials and townspeople are struggling to understand the rampage. Students and Denver media identified the gunmen as 18-year-old Eric Harris and 17-year-old Dylan Klebold. The two exchanged shots with police and were later found dead in the library with self-inflicted gunshot wounds and bombs around their bodies. A SWAT team expert called the shooting the worst thing he'd ever seen. SOUNDBITE: (English) "It was devastating, I mean I've been a cop for 27 years, a SWAT officer since 1980 and this was clearly the most devastating and traumatic scene I've been associated with. I hope never to see it again." SUPER CAPTION: George Hinckley, Lakewood SWAT team Both youths had two parents at home and came from families neighbours described as fine people. While the motive was unclear, several students said Harris and Klebold were members of a group calling itself the "Trenchcoat Mafia". The gang was made up of outcasts who bragged about guns and bombs and hated blacks and Hispanics, as well as athletes. Police who searched Harris' home said they found bomb-making material. Students said the group was fascinated with World War II and the Nazis and noted that Tuesday was Adolf Hitler's birthday. President Clinton has urged Americans to come together, pray together and act together in the wake of the Littleton school shooting. He led a moment of silence on Wednesday at the start of a meeting with White House volunteers. Clinton spoke of the "horror and agony" of Tuesday's attack in the Denver suburb. But he also praised the quick thinking of police and the courage of students and teachers who rushed to protect each other. Aides say Clinton is considering visiting the school - but only if it does not disrupt recovery efforts.
