"ESPY," Jun Fukuda's 1974 sci-fi espionage thriller for Toho, was brought to the United States in the 1980s by Henry G. Saperstein's UPA Productions of America. Another version of the film as released by UPA was titled "ESP-Y" and utilized different credits. The version seen here, as released in 1994 by Paramount/Gateway Home Video, is clearly built around Toho's finished export version. For example, the main title in the Japanese release and UPA's "ESP-Y" is placed over a later shot. With this version, UPA had to place the title over a shot that didn't already have on screen credits. I can't explain why UPA made two distinct versions of the film, evidently years apart. I presume the "ESP-Y" came first; without having been released on video, that version is exceptionally rare today.
