Major Studies Combines individual lessons and master classes. Master classes are divided into instrumental groupings: Guitar, Keyboard, Woodwind, Brass, Vocal, Bass and Drums / Percussion. Performance Studies This unit investigates specific genres of music within a rich collection of styles designed to inform and enhance the student’s performance skills. Concert Practice This is the practical component. Students workshop and perform the genres examined in the Performance Studies lectures in a concert environment. Genre Studies include: Twentieth Century Contemporary Blues and Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Soul and Funk, Jazz Standards, Australian Rock and Pop from 1958 to the present, World Music - West African, Afro-Cuban and Latin styles and the Contemporary Performance Artist. Ensemble In a small group setting, teamwork skills are developed as individual performance is focused on awareness, preparation, and commitment to common goals, culminating in a live performance at a significant music venue. Academic Studies All Bachelor of Music students undertake a series of Academic Studies units. These units cover theoretical and aural musicianship as well as historical and cultural studies of music. In the Foundation stages (1–2) of the degree, students cover a broad range of music styles and genres, including western art music and contemporary popular music. In the Industry stages (3–6) of the degree, students are able to focus their critical thinking in a variety of specialist areas including contemporary, jazz, baroque, classical, romantic, avant garde, music theatre, film, roots music, world music and latin music. Associated Studies (Electives) Students select associated studies from a range of performance, production, management, media and technology units to either focus their music education or explore wider opportunities. Collaboration With a network of more than 1500 performance, production and management students and unsurpassed performance, production and teaching facilities, AIM courses promote creative collaboration essential to career success, setting AIM graduates apart from graduates of other universities.
