(26 Jul 2018) KATE MARA TALKS VEGAN LIFESTYLE, FROM HUSBAND JAMIE BELL'S FOOD DECISIONS TO SISTER ROONEY MARA'S CLOTHING LINE The vegan lifestyle isn't for everyone and actress Kate Mara knows that. But that doesn't mean there aren't small ways in which people can make an impact on the food industry through their day-to-day choices. "If you're not willing to become a full-on vegan or a vegetarian, really, that is OK. But it's more about the choices you make and being aware of where the food you're buying is coming from. And, you know, just making conscious choices, I think," said Mara. Mara, best known for her role in "House of Cards," spent years as a vegetarian before becoming a vegan. She said her decision was influenced by a book she read describing the body's difficulty digesting meats and animal products. It was then the "animal activist in (her)" that finalized the decision. Mara says she finds New York and Los Angeles very vegan-friendly, but has noticed a change in food offerings globally. "I work in really remote places and you work all around the world and obviously certain countries are less… they have less options. But I have seen, as the years go by, I do see there is more and more awareness of it and it's less kind of crazy to say you're a vegan," she said. While Mara has embraced the vegan lifestyle, she admitted that her husband, Jamie Bell, has a different approach when it comes to food. "First of all, my husband is not a vegan. He eats meat. We live very different, we make different choices when it comes to food," said the actress. "But he totally respects me and my choices and I respect his." Mara said Bell does, however, make more conscious decisions. "He does not eat as much meat as he used to," said Mara. "And, you know, having a meatless Monday or whatever day of the week, that makes, that does make a huge difference in our environment." Mara's sister, Rooney Mara, has created a vegan fashion line with clothing and accessories that do not use materials involving animals. The "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" star opens her line, Hiraeth, at Barneys New York in August. "I mean it's, first of all, it's just stunning. Whether it's vegan or not, it's beautiful clothes," said Mara, describing her sister's line. "So, I mean, I'm just incredibly excited about it and very proud of her as well."
