Materiomusic: Making a Virus Sing

Using a mathematical analogy between matter and sound I turned protein molecules – the basic building blocks of life including viruses – into a musical instrument. Over thousands of years, human civilizations used materials to make sound – think of a vibrating string in a harp. I developed a new way of making music from the quantum mechanical motions of the protein building blocks of life. Not only is this the basis for new musical instruments and composition, but – because of the unique mapping between matter and sound – it allowed us to go the other way around – and design new materials using sound. BIOGRAPHY: Markus J. Buehler is a material scientist and composer of experimental music with an interest in sonification. He is the McAfee Professor of Engineering at MIT and leads MIT’s Laboratory for Atomistic and Molecular Mechanics. His work focuses on bio-inspired materials, to create materials with features from nano- to the macrolevels, and to develop biomaterials as musical instruments. His research focuses on protein materials – the basic constituent of life – rendering materials such as cells, blood vessels, but also spider silk and viruses. He is a member of the MIT Center for Art, Science and Technology (CAST) Executive Committee. More music:   / user-275864738   MIT News Release: https://news.mit.edu/2020/qa-markus-b...
