Women in Sport Event (27 March 2024) - Full panel discussion

On 27 March 2024, Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport hosted a dynamic event which explored the pivotal role universities can play in addressing the challenges faced by women's sport. The event welcomed the Women's Sport Collective and guests and showcase our world-class facilities and commitment to transforming health through sports. As part of our 200th anniversary celebrations, Visiting Professor of Sport, led a discussion on the challenges encountered by women in sports, from grassroots to elite levels. Professor Tim Cable, Director of the Institute of Sport, opened the event by welcoming a panel of experts: - Sue Anstiss, Founder and CEO of Fearless Women, who shared her experiences and insights as a prominent figure in women's sports advocacy. - Gary Young, Non-Executive Director of Manchester Thunder Netball Club and Board Member of World Netball, who highlights successful collaborations between clubs and universities. - Professor Larissa Davies, an expert in Applied Sports Economics, who discussed the societal impact of sports and the importance of evidence-based policy. - Professor Kirsty Elliott-Sale, renowned researcher on female athletes with work covering the menstrual cycle, hormonal contraceptives, and pregnancy. Kirsty covered recent developments in her work and discussed the launch of the Centre of Excellence for Women in Sport, which brings together leaders in sport, academic, and industry and provides high-quality, hands-on research and practice-based evidence to support female athletes.
