It was because they wanted something that’s easily tradeable, stable, rare enough to be valuable and easily malleable. In 1944, the Bretton Woods Agreement pegged USD to gold, and other currencies were pegged to the USD. However, due to US overspending, they had to cancel the agreement to print more money, thus ending the gold standard. Now, the value of the dollar is backed by the faith in the government. However it also means that if the government reckless overprints or go into a war, the dollar will devalue.
