Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghaat, expedition 2018 An open air 'lavoir' was constructed in 1890 to serve the hotels and hospitals of the British Raj. Today the 'dhobi ghaat' is as active as ever in serving the post-colonial megapolis of Mumbai. Families of 'dhobis' or 'washermen' still live and work here, although the work is difficult — men and women stand knee-deep in water scrubbing, tagging, drying and ironing millions of garments each year. The chaos and mystery of India run through this enterprise. While elsewhere in the world, mass laundromats have died out with the advent of the washing machine, here the traditional techniques survive in one of the most densely populated cities on the planet starting like clockwork each day at dawn.
