Nearly 20 years ago, the undefeated "Pride of Wales" or “The Italian Dragon Joe Calzaghe makes the 7th defense of his WBO Super Middleweight Title against the tough and skillful No. 2 rated contender Richie Woodhall of Telford, Shropshire. Prefight records; Calzaghe 29(24)-0, Woodhall 26(16)-2. Woodhall was a former WBC Super Middleweight Champion who won the title via UD12 over Thulani Malinga back in March 1998 and made 2 successful defenses between September 1998 and August 2000 before he was dethroned by then unbeaten 16(7)-0 Markus Beyer. In May 2000, he rebounded with an RTD8 win over Errol McDonald and earned another world title shot against the undefeated 28 year old WBO Super Middleweight Champion Joe Calzaghe. Back in October 1997, Calzaghe garnered the WBO Super Middleweight Crown via a competitive UD12 over Chris Eubank. Between January 1998 and August 2000, he successfully defended his WBO title 6 times. For his 7th defense, he would take on the seasoned Woodhall who had commendable victories over Glenn Catley, Vincenzo Nardiello, Silvio Branco & Thulani Malinga. On the other hand, Calzaghe had triumphed over notable oppositions such as Chris Eubank, Juan Carlos Gimenez, David Starie, Omar Sheika, Rick Thornberry & Robin Reid. In the opening round, Calzaghe took quick control of the action; hurting the challenger early with pinpoint combos to the body and head, even knocked his mouthpiece out with a sharp left hand around the midpoint mark. The experienced Woodhall then made quick adjustments in the following round and able to land efficiently particularly with his right hands against the normally elusive Calzaghe, who often return the favor in almost every exchange. Overall, the 10 year veteran challenger was a little more effective especially at long range. Richie’s best moments occurred in the 7th and 9th rounds where he momentarily wobbled the defending champion with huge right hands to the head. However, Calzaghe’s consistent body work through most rounds finally paid dividends as he sent Woodhall rolling to the canvas via a fiery body and head combination with merely a few seconds left in the 9th. From the moment the bell sounded to begin the 10th, the Fighting Pride of Wales wasted no time to finish the job as he hurt the challenger with a right to the body and followed up with an unflinching barrage of unanswered punches on the ropes, which prompted referee Roy Francis to call a halt to the assault at the 0.28 mark. Up to this point, Woodhall had given the undefeated Italian Dragon the toughest fight of his career. This would be his last fight, as he retired after this loss with a final record of 26(13)-3. Calzaghe on the other hand went on to rack up 14 successful defenses of his WBO Super Middleweight Title beating top oppositions such as Jeff Lacy, Charles Brewer, Tocker Pudwill, Byron Mitchell, Sakio Bika & Mikkel Kessler. In total, The Italian Dragon made 21 successful consecutive defenses of his WBO Super Middleweight Crown between January 1998 to November 2011; having held the title for over 13 years, which is the longest among Super Middleweight World Champions. His record of 21 successful consecutive defenses is tied only by the also undefeated Sven Ottke. ** However, it should be noted that Ottke’s perfect final record of 34(6)-0 is considered to be questionable as he allegedly received a number of hometown decisions notably over Charles Brewer, Thomas Tate, Glen Johnson, Byron Mitchell, Mads Larsen, and Robin Reid. Calzaghe moved up to Light Heavyweight in April 2008 to challenge “The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins for The Ring Light Heavyweight Championship, where he was decked in the opening round but came back to win an SD12. His greater hand speed, work rate and explosive combinations made the difference in the eyes of 2 judges. In November 2008, Super Joe fought his final career bout against the great Roy Jones Jr; just as in the Hopkins bout, he was down in the 1st frame but came back to win a (rather lopsided) decision. Only this time, it was not nearly competitive due to the fact that the 39 year old Jones was not nearly the fighter he was in his prime. After the win, Calzaghe retired with an unblemished 46(32)-0 record. He is consistently revered as one of the Greatest British Fighters of All Time as well as one of the Top 3 Greatest Super Middleweights of All Time.
