TO APPLY FOR AN ARTIST RESIDENCY: http://www.mikwchiyam.com MORE INFORMATION: http://www.cscree.qc.ca The Quebec Cree School Board Arts Education Concentration Program is an interdisciplinary enrichment program that aims to increase student retention by reinforcing Cree identity through artistic expression. The aspiration for the program is to inspire youth by introducing them to various contemporary Indigenous artists and to create contexts for students to collaborate with professional Canadian artists through four intensive in-school, seven-week artist residencies. This program promotes collaborative work, bringing together students, artists, teachers and community members to create positive learning spaces for creative initiatives to flourish, all the while promoting artistic literacy and recognition of the importance of the arts. This program will connect Cree youth to artists from diverse arts disciplines that include: musicians, visual artists, actors, spoken word artists, filmmakers, dancers, multimedia artists and traditional artisans. Program themes include storytelling through the arts, expressing collective student voice and communicating personal messages on a larger scale. Throughout the residency, artist in residence will engage in the creation their own body of work, which should align with the programs goals and themes. Students will be able to observe the processes of the artists as they engage in to the completion of their own work, creating meaningful links between aspiring and professional artists. The program is rooted in the belief that connecting high school students with current working professional artists can play a valuable role in increasing students’ interest and attachment to school. This program’s aim is to engage working Canadian artists in collaborative programming initiatives to work alongside teachers in generating interactive programming that promotes students’ appreciation for the arts; hooks them to learning through their personal interests; and facilitates the creation of effective, meaningful artistic productions. Our overarching goal is to promote accountability, and to empower students by providing them with opportunities to discover, build and share their personal and collective voices through the arts. This programming culminates in end of term showcases, where students and artists in residence will have the opportunity to share their work with their immediate community. In addition, students will be invited to apply to the annual N’we Jinan Music Arts Festival; a celebratory event showcasing the dynamic talent in the Eeyou Istchee.
