First of all, what is wind noise? Quite simply it is that rumbling and distorting sound that can overwhelm the sound you are trying to record. This video is about fixing audio problems, specifically fixing wind noise on your videos, in other words, that annoying wind sound that can spoil your recording. When you record with a microphone it is the air movement that the mic pickup is responding to. Unfortunately, the microphone cannot distinguish between air movements caused by speech or other desirable sounds and the wholesale movement of air caused by the wind. Shooting outdoors can present a number of problems to deal with and the wind is probably going to be one that’s going to be the most challenging. If the wind is getting up you could end up with a recording that is ruined because the microphone is being battered by the wind. Putting a dead cat, or windjammer, on to your microphone will certainly help. And these are some of the ones I use from three different microphones in my kit bag. This is the type you have probably seen journalists use on TV. The microphone slips into the dead cat, which in this case is a foam tube with a furry covering made by Rycote and they call it a softie. This mic can be held down at about waist height, pointed up at your mouth or your interviewee’s mouth. It’s not too obtrusive, especially since viewers have become used to seeing them on screen. The second one here is for my digital recorder. Again the furry material slips over the microphones to protect them from any incoming wind blasts. These smaller dead cats are sometimes called dead kittens. If you intend recording just audio with the bottom mic on your iPhone, this particular dead cat can be slipped onto the bottom of the iPhone. You could use your phone as a handheld mic. Unfortunately, it’s no use in protecting the front microphone when you’re filming because it will also cover up the lens.
