Video Transcript: The history of antisemitism has harmed Jewish people all over the world. Antisemitism is not a single event, it is continuous and increasing, becoming hatred. By understanding history, we can challenge antisemitism. Historically, early Christians blamed Jews for the death of Jesus, despite the Roman empire carrying out the crucifixion of Jesus, and not Jews. This is a form of blood libel — people viewed Jews as evil and blood-thirsty, causing them to want to cleanse Jews. Jews were unable to apply for certain jobs. The only jobs Jews could have were in finance — like lending money. The Shakespeare play The Merchant of Venice contains a Jewish character named Shylock, a wicked moneylender, which perpetuates the stereotype of Jews being greedy. Antisemitism increased, and then the worst occurred during the 20th century when the Nazis demonized Jews as an inferior race and set out to wipe out all Jews — leading to the Holocaust, the murder of millions across Europe. Antisemitism is a persistent issue. Even when it’s covert, it’s still harmful. We need to educate and unify in addressing antisemitism. Antisemitism must be stopped. All we want is respect for all people.
