Pride community crosswalk vandalism raises questions about public safety

The Pride Community Crosswalk in the South Perry District was vandalized, according to Odyssey Youth Movement. Odyssey Youth Movement says the crosswalk at 12th and Perry was tagged and graffitied, and was found Saturday morning. "This is the biggest act of vandalism and violence we faced," said Ian Sullivan, who's Executive Director of Odyssey Youth Movement. Sullivan says the crosswalk was meant to be an opportunity and a sign that shows people are seen and valued in the community. He says it's heartbreaking to see hatred in his neighborhood. "Even as a LGBTQ adult, it's supposed to be my safe neighborhood and my safe city. This is not just something we need to worry about for young folks. This is for all of our community members," Sullivan said. A Perry district neighbor, Crystal Webster, says it's a safety concern for the community. "You just don't know who's lurking in the shadows over here. For these kids, this is their home," Webster said. Spokane Police say they don't have information about who's responsible for the vandalism yet. Officers will continue to investigate.
