It was the fateful day of October 5th,, that marked a departure from bear lover Timothy Treadwell's usual routine… Typically, he would have left Katmai by late September when most of the bears he was familiar with would start going into hibernation. However, in 2003, for reasons that to this day remain speculative, Treadwell decided to stay longer. Some suggest he was trying to protect the bears from poachers; others propose that he wanted to observe the less familiar, more aggressive bears that descended from the mountains in search of food before winter. Whatever the reason, Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, set up camp in the Grizzly Maze that fateful October day.
