(16 Feb 2015) Thousands of people were expected to leave Shanghai by train on Monday in preparation for the Chinese New Year holiday later this week. Shanghai rail officials expect 383-thousand passengers to board trains across the city's three railway stations on Monday. That is just short of the peak - both Saturday and Sunday saw 390-thousand passengers each day. Buying tickets often proves tough, with passengers at the station on Monday saying that even buying tickets online was now becoming much harder. Before the holiday begins on Wednesday, rail officials expect 10.3 million rail journeys to have originated from Shanghai. Outside Shanghai Railway Station, extra security has been put in place but it is still in line with normal operations at peak periods like national holidays. Armed police, emergency communications trucks and temporary police units have been stationed outside the main entrance and over 300 military police and volunteers have been pulled in to help during the busy period. The transport ministry predicted that this year the annual new year travel rush will entail 295 million railway trips and 57 million plane trips. This year's Spring Festival, ushering in the Year of the Sheep, runs from 18 to 25 February.
