Welcome to the second season of the Life Lessons Lounge podcast. We kick off this season with the incredible Anita Sommers, who is a systemic family therapist and youngest of 13 siblings to explore how our childhoods, family systems, and personal healing journeys shape who we become. From growing up in organized chaos to realizing at only eight years old, that she could understand people deeply. We talk trauma, emotional regulation, parenting, and what it really means to be seen and loved in relationships. And Anita shares how moving from the US to the UK and now Portugal, helped her redefine belonging and purpose. She spends her time between Lisbon and Cambridge. Who is Anita Sommers: Systemic Couple and Family Psychotherapist Known for her warm, proactive and understanding style, Anita specialises in working with individuals, couples and families looking to make meaningful changes in their lives and relationships. Her focus areas include strengthening relationship connections, healing past trauma, understanding family-of-origin patterns, reflecting on attachment history and breaking free from destructive cycles. Imbued with gentle humour, sensitive suggestions, and attentive listening, Anita's sessions empower clients to act, think, and feel differently; make sense of their experience; better understand how they view themselves and their relationships; and uncover how to break the patterns that hold them back. Anita has spent her entire career helping individuals address issues including anxiety, stress, self-esteem, perfectionism, career issues, anger management, conflict resolution, depression, bereavement, eating disorders, and relationship issues. Anita receiving her masters in Marriage & Family Therapy in 2004 from Edgewood College, Madison, WI USA. Following this, she moved to San Diego, California where she ran an Intensive Outpatient Program for individuals with eating disorders. In 2007, Anita moved to Maine, USA where she worked as a Systemic Family Therapist at a school with children with behavioural difficulties. In 2012, Anita relocated again to Cambridge, UK. During her time in Cambridge, Anita worked for six years for Children Social Care and then for the NHS for a few years before deciding to go into Private Practice in 2018. A year ago, Anita moved to Lisbon where she now works with clients both online and in-person. Anita has tremendous enjoyed private practice due to being able to work with clients as long as needed rather than being dictated by an agency. She feels that she gets to spend the necessary to time to hear clients' stories and offer meaningful work. Additionally, she enjoys the flexibility and variety that private practice offers.
