The vaccine schedule for kids has shifted over time. “If you go back and compare your shots that you got as a kid growing up in the 80s or the 60s or whenever, we actually now current day for kids gives them less total doses,” said Lee Health Pediatrician Dr. Phillip Mote. Part of that positive shift is due to research. “As we use the vaccine for decades now, we kind of see how your body reacts and how your protection is formed, and we can use less doses because we’ve shown in research that that’s safe.” The HepB vaccine is given at birth, but most others are given at 2 months with boosters at 4 and 6 months. Some are then given at a 12, 15, and 18 months, then there’s a break until they are school aged. Some vaccines like MMR can be given as a combination. “They’ve done head-to-head trials and the evidence is definitely that it is safe and it actually is better because if you think about it because you’re giving less shots overall. Instead of having to give three pokes, you’re only giving one poke,” said Dr. Mote. Vaccines have been successful in keep instances of things like Measles and Rubella low here in the US. “I know it’s a hard decision to make to get vaccines, but you’re also making decisions to not get a vaccine and your child is now susceptible to getting that disease, so there’s always two sides to that coin,” said Dr. Mote. Your child’s pediatrician can help answer whatever vaccine questions you may have.
