Republic of the Union of Myanmar National Unity Government Ministry of Foreign Affairs Statement (16/ 2023) 28 August 2023 NUG Statement on the Terrorist Military Junta’s Expulsion of the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste from Myanmar 1. It has been brought to our attention that the illegitimate terrorist military junta that does not represent the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, has compelled the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, who is representing the State of Timor-Leste and its people in Myanmar and exercising his diplomatic responsibilities, to permanently leave from Myanmar prior to 1st September 2023. 2. Being an illegal organization that has unlawfully taken control of the country’s power through the use of force, the junta does not hold any authority to make decisions concerning the international diplomatic relations of the State. The right to decision making on such matter rests solely with the people of Myanmar and the legitimate government duly elected by them. The expulsion of Timorese Chargé d’Affaires from Myanmar is a customary, unlawful and inappropriate act of the illegitimate military junta. 3. We deeply respect and appreciate the position of Timor-Leste that values fundamental democratic policies and standards, the rule of law and human dignity. This stands as an exemplary model for others to follow. 4. We respectfully states that the Timor-Leste’s steadfast stance as a good friend will always be deeply remembered and our sincere gratitude will be permanently inscribed in the hearts of the National Unity Government and the people of Myanmar. 5. We appeal to the various governments of the international community which respect and value democratic principles, human rights values and standards and embrace humanitarianism, to stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar, like Timor-Leste has done, and provide support to Myanmar for its return to the path of democracy.
