Roel Vertegaal - Towards Real Reality Interfaces - CLUE seminar

Roel Vertegaal - Queen's University The current hype cycle of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) fails to recognize the inherent problem with these technologies: That they require alteration of the human perceptive channels in order to achieve the illusion of immersion in a virtual world. This requirement leads not only to bulky head mounted displays, but also to cumbersome tracking technologies to keep these displays in sync with the user's movements. At the Human Media Lab in Kingston, Ontario, we have been working since 2004 on an alternate approach: Modifying the real world, by turning physical materials into programmable software objects. I will begin with our first attempts, which utilized dynamic projection mapping to imbue solid objects, paper and textiles with high resolution interactive displays. Next, I will discuss our use of conforming flexible displays to create digital skins that allow objects of any shape to appear like a display without the need for projection or tracking. I will then discuss our recent progress in developing light field displays that allow glasses-free, head tracking free stereoscopic images with motion parallax on any object. I will conclude with a discussion of our work on programmable matter, via self-levitating physical voxels. BIO: Roel Vertegaal is one of Canada's most influential designers of future interactive technologies. He is a Professor of Human-Computer Interaction at Queen's University in Canada, where he directs the Human Media Lab (www.humanmedialab.org), a boutique laboratory designed by world-renowned designer Karim Rashid. Roel studied Electronic Music at Utrecht Conservatory in The Netherlands, and holds a Master's in Computer Science and PhD in Human Factors. He is a co-founder of Mark One, the developers of the Vessyl smart beverage container. Roel founded the alt.chi sessions at the annual ACM CHI conference, co-founded the ACM Eye Tracking Research and Applications conference and chaired the ACM Tangible, Embodied and Embedded Interactions (TEI 2012) conference. Roel coined the terms Attentive User Interfaces (2003), Organic User Interfaces and Flexible User Interfaces (2008). His best known inventions include the eye contact sensor (eyebox2, 2003), spherical (2008) and cylindrical (2012) computers, 3D live-sized holographic videoconferencing (TeleHuman 2012), the first flexible paper computer (PaperWindows 2004), the flexible smartphone (PaperPhone 2010), the paper tablet pc (PaperTab, 2012), as well as Smart Pause technology featured in the Samsung Galaxy line of phones. His empirical contributions range from studies on the effect of eye contact on turn taking in group conversations, to Fitts' Law studies of flexible display interactions. http://clue.carleton.ca/ Royalty Free Music from Bensound
